A cup decorated with handcarved geometric design which is a classic Islamic pattern known from the surfaces of the Alhambra Palace. It is formed by nasrid polygons. This cup is decorated wth polygon called "El Avión" (Plane). That design can be found on the walls of the Salón de Comares in Alhambra Palace.
The form of the cup is inspired by Podstakannik (from russian, literally means “thing under the glass) is a tea glass holder. Usually made of metal. The purpose is to easily hold the glass of hot tea. Usually the glass had very thin walls. It was a traditional way of drinking tea in Russia, Ukraine and other post-Soviet countries. I had tea in basket (podstakannik) many times as a child.
And here is my ceramic variation of this post-Soviet tradition combined with decoration formed by islamic geometric patterns.
This cup is a fusion of different cultures and traditions.
The top part without a pattern has very thin walls and the bottom is more thick and covered with hand carved pattern. All made with black clay and finished with white glaze that break beautifully on the edges uncovering the dark clay and making the pattern more atractive.
This cup holds around 300 ml
It is handmade cup and each one is unique - there will be small variations in the form, size and colour compared to the ones from photos.
